Unit 34 Research

For my research I made a simple moodboard with variety of films, books, and games that are classed as murder mystery centric productions; I also studied the noir and neo noir styles to help further develop my own final film.

The examples I searched were:
Fables: Legends in Exhile (Comic)
BladeRunner (Film)
Agatha Christies Poirot (Books and TV shows)
Clue (Film)
The Usual Suspects (Film)
Chinatown (Film)
LA Noire (Video Game)
Alfred Hitchcock (various films)

These gave me a good insight into the variety of plots and characters that make up murder mystery productions, and seeing different medias really helped me understand the versatility of the genre.

Looking into these has really given me ideas for final films, and helped refine any existing kernels of ideas. This has made me much more enthusiastic for the project which I know will help me create my final film as I know I suffer from losing interest in a film the longer I spend on it, but having inspiration and benchmarks to meet extends my attention and assists my creation.

Research Evaluation

Research

In order to properly understand my brief I carried out primary and secondary research into the theme of ‘The Land That Time Forgot’ in the form of photographing locations and looking into existing stories that correspond with the theme. Here are the results of my research:

Primary:

With my DSLR camera I went around College, my house, and my garden in order to get a wide range of shots.

All the contact sheets of my photoshoots

My general ideas with the shots were to shoot landscapes or objects that either looked like they could be timeless, or were incredibly aged to suit the theme. I found this the easiest to do as trying to explore more contemporary themes were practically impossible with natural shots, however when I edited the settings on the camera it made some shots conform to these themes easier.

This was helpful in helping me come up with ideas as if I decided to film my final piece, I will have practise in making places look more suited towards the brief. However this still doesn't help much if I choose to animate my film.

After this I began looking into films, books, and tv shows for pieces that correlated with the brief so I could explore existing pieces  to pull ideas and contrast with.

Here is what I found:

With the theme 'The Land that Time Forgot' I was able to pull 3 general plot elements that conform to the theme, but still greatly differ and are still equally popular to base films, books, and TV shows on. These were: Dinosaurs, Time Travelling, and Alternate Dimensions. They all have their separate reasons for being linked to the theme which I shall explain for each one along with examples for each.

Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs was definitely the first thing that came to mind as there is a film baring the same title; and as the theme suggests it being a film in the past, and the furthest into the past we know of is the dinosaurs, it really wasn't a major discovery to make. This is probably why many medias have used them to base their stories off. Here are 3 of the most popular:

The Land That Time Forgot
A pretty famous films, The Land That Time Forgot was one of the first to use dinosaurs, this was probably due to the past inability to accurately recreate dinosaurs in such a basic era of production design and prop manufacturing; But it still wowed audiences and introduced an incredible new genre into film.

Jurassic Park
Another straight out classic in the dinosaur genre, Jurassic Park was one of the biggest films of its time and blazed a trail for films to come by being both brilliantly written and loyal to its source material, as well as its incredible special effects which still hold up today. This was the very first thing I thought of when we were given our brief, probably due to this film being closer to my childhood than a 1975 dinosaur film.

Walking with Dinosaurs
This is the only example that isn't a fictional film. Walking with Dinosaurs was a TV series that explored the possibilities of dinosaurs, how they lived, and how they died. It was also well known for their visuals but even more well known for its factual base; this documentary opened doors for factual study which allowed a theoretical or fictional based outlook to be laced in-between real science and study. Its a fascinating take on the genre, but not one I could use as influence, regrettably.

Time Travel
Time travel is a pretty expansive take on the land that time forgot as it is a subtler take on the theme. The theme can suggest more drastic issues such as people forgetting important things due to manipulating time, or people getting lost or losing track of time in their new world. I do much prefer this as a topic just for its endless possibilities but it can be a weak for a plot as its difficult to bring a new spin on this; nevertheless, here are some examples of the genre:

Back To The Future
Beginning with another classic, Back to Future was way more literal when it blazed the trail when it featured a delorean (which is now famous for its role in the film) set a trail of fire at 88mph and disappear into the time the driver desired. Now, although time travel was explored in earlier films, shows, and books, Back to the Future made time travel humorous and awkward and is a great example of time travel in cinema.

Seconds
Seconds is a pretty obscure graphic novel done by Brian Lee O'Malley which explores the ability a 29 year old has to warp time when she comes across a notepad and a crop of magic mushrooms which give her the ability to erase her mistakes and try again. She uses it to help get her restaurant built, her ex back to her, and her life with her old restaurant stable and well managed. I really like this take on time manipulation, its really relatable to watch a girl go over her mistakes and end up lost in a land that time forgot.

Bill And Teds Excellent Adventure
This is definitely on the joke-ier side of time travel when two lazy, idiotic teens come across a time travelling phone box and use it to get the world famous historical leaders in order to present a kick ass history presentation at high school. Although this film only slightly corresponds to the theme, I still find its take enjoyable and lighthearted, its a difficult approach but when its well written it makes a classic.

 Alternate Dimensions
This is the final example, I also feel its a more loosely related one as you have to think a little longer to be able to join it to the theme but I think its just as relatable. You can generally only relate it depending on the story which does add a couple holes into the genre and its likeness to the theme but its so much more interesting and easily has the most varied potential plots of all three. Here are some examples of this genre:
Lion, The Witch, And the Wardrobe
This is the probably one of the oldest examples but it has such a simple concept and such relatable roots of just escaping a horrible world. Because when a group of evacuee children leave to the country, they discover a giant wardrobe in the house they stay in and when they walk through they find the magical world of Narinia but when they return after spending an entire lifetime there, they find that only 15 minutes has passed. This is a really great concept because its essentially a dream, you leave for longer than you think and anything in the world is possible. Its definitely my favourite kind of alternate dimension as its based way more in escapism than falling into despair, but it can get a bit too convenient when everything has no consequences
.

Coraline
On the opposite scale Coraline is a story that sees our character begin is a normal, albeit boring word, and travel into an extraordinary world full of fantastic people and places and colours and story, but it all turns sour when she can only stay in this brilliant world if she agrees to sew buttons to her eyes. Its really messed and really flips the genre on its head by taken the escapism of a new world and turning it into a hellish nightmare. Its stunningly interesting I love films that turn from being lovely to being nightmare fuel for the unwise.

Spirited Away
Finally I would like to show an example from a personal favourite. Spirited Away tells the story of a girl who needs to save her parents after they get turned to pigs in a ghosts town in an old abandoned theme park. This one is really interesting because the city is very hidden but when its entered the city becomes a sprawling world and we find the character dropped into something too big for a 10yr old to comprehend but she fights for her parents and to get back home. Its  a really interesting and I like the idea of it sounding so simple but then expanding into a world of possibilities and magic, overall its a really good way to interpret 'The Land that Time Forgot' as we watch her lose herself in this world and everyone else's problem.

In conclusion, this research has helped ideas a lot; I definitely want to have an animated piece and I want to explore alternate dimensions and time travel especially as I feel when combined they could definitely adhere better to the theme better and could also make a much more interesting plot. I also liked researching these as it ensures I don't accidently copy another film subconsciously, and it helps widen my gaze for other potential plot points or elements I could use.

Photo manipulation practises

To help prepare for our final film, we made 2 different types of visually manipulated images to explore the main techniques behind the art form.

The first one technique we used was manipulating photographs we had taken our selves and editing them in photoshop.

We got the photos by going around college and photographing anything we could with the potential of them being manipulated. Here are all the photos I took:

In the end I decided to with a photo I took of Chloe taking a photo and have her camera pan down to reveal her face.

This, however, did not translate well on photoshop. It was easy enough to use the mask tool to separate the hands and camera from the rest of the background and put them onto a new layer, however using the clone tool to edit the background into an full background didn't go well. It went well with the brick wall and hoodie, but the right side of the shot warped and it doesn't look very successful as an effect, although this wasn't the worst part of my image. Because of the animation I had planned I had to find an image to replace Chloes face so that it would look believable, but I didn't take a second picture of her face from straight on so as a joke I took a face from a different image where she's at a slight angle. I also had issues editing her hair so it ended up looking like she has a wonky face and really long sideburns, but she winks so the charm makes up for it.
The final image

In hindsight it was an incredibly bad decision to choose such a complex image, but it was also hilarious so it at least serves a comical purpose. However I also don't think I will be using this method in my final piece because its very labour intensive, and I won't have the time available to make a full film with this. But it was really interesting to see this method as it is used a lot in films so it's definitely fun knowing what goes into this type of animation, but its also plain to see its limitations as well.

The second method we used was drawing individual animation frames and shooting them on a real background.

To begin, I drew out objects from the video game 'Portal'. I did originally plan to animate the main character, Chell, but as it took so long to draw one frame, I instead chose to animate the inanimate objects instead.

After they were all drawn and cut out, I positioned a DSLR camera on a tripod and animated the paper objects (in this case a box falling off a ledge and into a portal and back onto the ledge).

Editing this was incredibly easy, it only required importing the frames into photoshop, setting each picture to be an frame in an animation, and saving the results as a looping gif.

The Final gif
I really like this method of animating a film, its very organic and it can still have a lot of style and variation. It's also easy to shoot, as long as blutac and tape is around, you're pretty much sorted. Its also easier to achieve depth of field and more interesting shots. However drawing each object is very labour intensive and difficult to reproduce for each frame, which means a lot of planning has to go in to keep the frames looking similar and animating well. I think I would like to use this method (or maybe a variation to speed up the process) because its really sweet and a lot of fun.

Final Production Evaluations (With teaser uploaded (fixed))

After the research I started playing with ideas. Since I was able to semi-produce an initial idea, I could refine more precisely my desires for my final film. From these refinements I came up with two ideas.

Discarded Idea: A door appears in a girl’s house out of nowhere and when she opens it and walks through she finds it’s just a blank empty space. She enters the room and tries finding any sort of wall or light, even with a torch it’s clearly just a blank space. I’m not quite sure how to end it at present.

I didn't do this idea because it doesn’t seem to go anywhere, it’s a nice concept and if I worked it right it would make a good art piece or a nice little story, but that would require a crazy amount of time to figure out and actually accomplish,

Final Idea: A girl has a regular life, she wakes up, goes to college, comes home, does her work, watches TV, and goes to sleep. But on the way home one evening her headphones start bugging up and she hears a voice saying ‘It all seems a bit familiar, doesn’t it?’ She’s confused and then the world starts to look glitchey, breaks apart and she wakes up back in bed. All seems fairly normal apart from the fact she wakes up in her clothes. She goes through the door and the leads to another room. This will continue for a couple minutes, she will try escape each room, face its hardships and the demon who lead her here. He will manifest in multiple forms, some audio, some visual, and some in full 3d which turn out to be her. There is lots of confrontation and somehow (I will figure out) she will defeat the demon. Eventually she wakes up one last time in her bed once more, she opens the door and its out in to her house it seems normal, but when she shuts her door, leaving her rooms, the demon is revealed again, but hiding and waiting. The film ends here.

My final idea ended up being a mash up of my initial idea and what the discarded idea began as. Where the initial idea began as opening a door to a land without time and how the character would explore that land, to the discarded ideas beginning of a character who would fall into a different land and be forced to explore in order to survive. This also incorporated the idea I began producing because it features a side character who acts as a tour guide (although one appeared more evil than the other). But overall I’m happy with this idea, I think it makes a good arty story as appose to a more linear storyline. I also liked the possibility for it to be a fast paced and visually striking piece, I wanted to make a more visual developed piece as my last one didn’t have any sort of effects or colour edits which I think would have made it look much better and much more polished.

Communicating with my DOP
After I got the basic synopsis I wrote the script. Writing the script was pretty easy, having the synopsis down as a base helped incredibly so it was even easier to mould what I envisioned into a feasible script. Shortly after, I drew up a storyboard, again this was very simple with the script as a guide and a clear vision on what I wanted. Then I planned my actors, and this is the only part of the planning I had initial trouble with. As I had planned to act in this myself, I had to get a camera operator and Director of Photography; Luckily, photography student and close friend Lauren Robertshaw agreed to working with me on this film. I'm glad I got a photography student on board as I knew the experience in composition, lighting, and framing would help make this the visually superior piece to my previous films. Then, with her on board, I was able to schedule the shoot and prepare for filming. Also, to help organise the schedules for locations, I created a colour coded script detailing where and when each shot would take place to help my form a proper schedule.
The colour coded script

The animated test shot.
As a side note, I did begin animating this piece initially, even having a work in progress of one of the shots and getting a few voice actors in; But I scrapped this idea as I didn't like the look as much as a filmed piece so I returned to the original plan and began filming my piece.

However this is where my problems arose. The first day I was meant to film I ended up having to go to hospital after a seizure and I lost the day to film and so did my DOP, with no one else available to help me film I had to reschedule. However Lauren was only available on select days of the week, so losing one day of filming ended up setting me back 2 weeks to get all my filming done as well as the voice acting clips required for the final edit. Apart from this however, I did pick up all the shots I planned for, even if they weren't as I had originally planned.

With all my shots filmed, I began to edit. However due to  the film schedule overrunning its original length, this left my terrifyingly small amount of time in which to edit my film, consequently it was swiftly edited into a teaser trailer and I only ended up editing the introductory paragraph of the script.

Editing in Sony Vegas 13
Editing in Audacity
Editing was done in Sony Vegas Pro 13, I imported all the video and audio clips into the media gallery and began finding, and editing other audio clips that would be used such as: Music clips edited to sound as if they are being played out of headphones, and gathering sounds from an online site that provides free sound clips for films. After all clips were prepared it was only a matter of cutting them together and adding in the sound clips. Some shots required copying and pasting background noise from others to replace any unwanted audio clips, and some required finding new audio clips entirely to replace badly shot sound, but this was the only problem I had to overcome. The only shot that proved particularly  troublesome was the one with the main character having her headphones break up and reveal the voice of VOICE before it cuts out to static. I had to edit the clip, work out the timings, then edit the sound in a separate program (Audacity) using the timings as guide to form the final shot. I used a song which I edited, then a mix of about 9 different layers from spate clips or edits of the song to make the final audio mix. Then I imported the sound into the final edit to use as a base to edit the video alongside to compose the final shot. To finish off the edit I added a block colour, and a pink blue gradient on separate layers above everything else and setting them to overlay, and screen and reducing the opacity to add a nice subtle colour and brighten up the shots. In the end I ended up creating, compositing, or editing over 80 different clips to create my final teaser.

Looking for free sound sites
In the end, although I at least got to create a teaser, I am very disappointed with myself this time around. Or at the very least annoyed that I couldn't film quicker and get the film out as I had planned it. I wanted it to be well written, visually striking, well edited, and memorable; and it turned out looking, or at least feeling, rushed and badly executed. The planning was how I wanted it and every seem to come together fine, but in the end the timing just fell apart which is incredibly upsetting as I looked forward to having a finished and final piece I could be proud of. But I shall use these short comings as footholds to become more organised, and better prepared for a shoot in the future.

And here is the Final Teaser:

'VOICE' Final Script

Voice

By Taliah Lamont

First Draft

Quick Cut Montage of a girl (MC) waking up, showering, brushing her teeth, then she travels to college. Continue the montage showing her at college then we follow her on her journey back but as we watch her walking back up home with her headphones on, they start glitching, the music becomes distorted before it cuts out entirely, she’s incredibly confused but as she goes to take her headphones off we hear a voice on the other line.

VOICE: Doesn’t this seem a bit…familiar?

This voice distorts slightly towards the end but then the rest of world starts to mess up and it cuts out to black.

{Int. Bedroom, Morning}

MC wakes in her own room, confused but seemingly alright although she is dressed in what she wore to college which is slightly strange. She stumbles out of bed and sees a sign on her door which reads “Welcome Home”. She opens the door, it’s a black space, and this is really weird now. She slams the door shut

VOICE: Wrong Move.

She turns around to face the voice but it cuts to black.

VOICE: We need to get you out of these walls.

A light turns on to show MC stood in black empty space. She walks a while, maybe runs for a short while but stops, the blackness appears endless. She looks down, she’s pretty exasperated, but her head snaps around when she hears the voice.

VOICE: Who else bets we are inside your brain right now?

MC digs in her pockets to find a torch and points it round to where she thinks the voice is coming from. She doesn’t find it but we can see a very faint silhouette of VOICE.

VOICE: Cos let’s face it, few others places have so little occupying it.

MCs anger at this comment is thinly disguised and she starts stomping further into the abyss.

VOICE: Or maybe it’s actually full of horrible things and they’ve just been hidden away? That can’t be healthy…

MC stops, this comment got to her a bit, the implications alone drops any facades she had and replaces them with the pensieve and cowardly emotions she tried to mas;, but she gathers herself up and tries to maintain her normal composure, as she does this a door opens, and she walks through.

VOICE: {Echoed} Escaping them again? {Sarcastic} Good choice.

After this she ends up in a corridor. It seems normal; she walks down and walks through the door only to find her back at the beginning. She goes down the corridor again, it happens again. She tries every door on the corridor but each one is locked. She starts jogging, and then running but each time she goes round in circles. After a few spins she stops, it’s infuriating her and she just has to stop herself from bubbling over. She sits down at the side of corridor, pretty defeated.

VOICE: Having trouble?? You’ve been at this for hours….or has it been days, how should you know, you haven’t been keeping track.

MC has her head in her hands, she incredibly stressed right now she just can’t deal with such a lack of logic in her life. She stands up and turns around angrily to open the door she entered through. VOICE appears before her.

VOICE: Finally, you’re starting to catch up.

VOICE clicks his fingers and it cuts to black.

MC wakes up in her regular, empty classroom. Immediately she knows what to do. She needs to solve it, she needs to get out.

VOICE: You know I bet they miss you, your family. Months without you must be crushing them, it’s such a shame you can’t be there…not fully anyway. I’m sure you’re with them in spirit.

She begins by trying to turn on a computer, this just puts a crashing screen on sputtering phrases that VOICE has said, and this is followed when every computer turns on and does it.

VOICE: If only you could remember and who knows they might get you in body as well…

But without blinking she just gets up, she takes a brief look under the desks for anything that can help her, but proceeds to stride out into the hallway. But she stops.

VOICE: Is it coming back now?

She has a flashback of her running out of this door, and through this corridor. She follows it.

VOICE: This place will do that, it stores memories that even the brain can’t recall.

A small spotted trail of blood stains the floor, she begins running over it as memories return.

VOICE: Not immediately anyway…

The flashback mirrors her actions as she follows this memory with the sounds of screams and footsteps growing louder until she collapses at the end after a loud series of shots and we see a shot of the blood draining out of her. Cut to:

{Int. Broken Shack, time unknown}

Show MC asleep on the floor, but she jolts awake and leaps to her feet. She’s not sure where she is but it isn’t nice. It’s marred with random clutter, lots of papers and crumpled up sheets, books and general junk although it’s plain to see some papers with the phrases the Voice has used written on paper, and on the walls (maybe). The blood dripping down her where she was shot is evident and she’s in new territories of pain. VOICE is stood before her, his hand raised like a gun until it falls by his side.

VOICE: Sorry about that…No other way to wake up someone in your, uh, situation.

MC starts throwing books and objects at him but they pass right through. She is pissed.

VOICE: I apologised! I can’t take back the bullets even if I wanted to! This is over!

MC stops throwing. She looks relieved but confused, it’s over?

VOICE: This…exchange was last on my list, or at least second to last, okay? You’ll wake up and you’ll be back in bed. Don’t worry.

VOICE snaps his fingers and MC does indeed wake up in her pyjamas and in bed. She sits bolt upright, checks her wounds, which sure enough are there but bandaged, then she walks out and leaves her room; but when the door shuts VOICE is sat where she was in bed, relaxed.

VOICE: ‘Don’t worry’… She probably wouldn’t if she knew it was the 400th time we met. Oh well, plenty more time to get reacquainted.

He laughs to himself briefly, rests his head back then clicks his fingers, this cuts immediately to black.

The END.

Narrative and Non Narrative Writing

Narrative and Non Narrative Writing
When any form of story is written it can be classed as a narrative or non-narrative piece. This, in its simplest terms, refers to whether it is fictional or factual.
Narrative writing is easily the most well-known form of storytelling and writing. Present in many books, films, and TV Shows, its primary identification is that it has a beginning, middle, and end, in both fictional and non-fictional writing. More in depth traits narrative writing has are:
Its Organisation- Narrative writing gradually weaves exposition and character development throughout the script. It also paces the story in order to build tension, and excitement, and gives it peaks and troughs in action to pace it properly and keep the reader/viewer intrigued.
Grammar- In books, it has been known for authors to bend grammatical rules, spelling structures, and punctuation in order to please the reader, this is also one of the reasons exclamation points were created as fictional writing is the only form that requires the exclamation point to help portray enthusiasm in dialogue.
And Tone: Tone is employed by writers almost exclusively as it channels emotions through the writing helping to immerse the reader further into the story. This is also used in visual storytelling as well but generally through more subtle ways such as lighting, the delivering of a line, or in the accompanying score.
Here are some examples of narrative films:

With a factual piece however, it’s a lot more structured with a much more rigid set of rules. The only changing part of factual documentaries is their organisation as there is no set beginning, middle, or end. As the timeline for factual documentaries tend to be very fluid on where they could begin or end, and they have a limit to how much they can include, they have to choose where it begins and ends which can restrict the factual content. Other than that though, non-narrative productions have very little tone, its only employed in certain scenes to induce very extreme emotions; And as mentioned previously, the grammar is incredibly strict as a factual pieces should be.
Here are some examples of non-narrative films:
